But, yes, the Preds do have language and names and all that good stuff. The AvP novels are excellent for expanding the knowledge of the Yautja. (That's where the Yautja name came from in the first place.  ) |

Actually, the comparison with a parrot is a very good one precisely because of how a parrot understands language. The African Grey parrot is considered to be among the smartest species of parrot and the best talker. Unlike most other birds, the African Grey is not a pure mimic. Rather than simply repeating, it can form unique phrases and use them in a contextually appropriate way. The most famous example is Alex the parrot who developed a vocabulary of over 300 words and could answer questions asked about different subjects. But I'm getting away from the point.
In the first and second Predator films and in the first AVP, the Predators were not only able to repeat phrases of human language, but were able to use them in proper context.
In Predator 1, the Predator used a recording of the words, "Over here!" to lure prey much in the same way that a human hunter would use a duck-call. It wasn't sophisticated, but at the least it demonstrated an understanding that this was a phrase used to get someone's attention.
In AVP, the Predator used a recording of "The enemy of my enemy is my friend," and seemed to understand the sentiment (and on a related tangent was also able to communicate fairly effectively with basic sign language) and understood enough of Lex's responses to modify his behaviour.
In Predator 2, the Predator actually spoke words without the aid of a computer at several points. It said the words, "Mother of God!" which it had heard from Det. Archuleta and understood to be an exlamation of dismay; it spoke the phrase in the slaughterhouse when it realised that its camouflage was malfunctioning. Also in the slaughterhouse it was able to anticipate the word "Motherfucker" before it was even spoken, being familiar with the expression. In another instances, it said, "Shit happens," using the phrase in a very different (but still appropriate) context from when it was first heard, indicating a fine understanding of the meaning. Also, at the end when the Elder tossed the pistol to Danny Glover, he said clearly, "Take it," again without the aid of a computer and without having heard the words spoken first.
I would therefore think that the Predators' minimal use of human language is more likely to be due to lack of need, lack of interest, and mechanical difficulty in articulating the sounds rather than a lack of understanding and/or ability to understand. |
