I have the feeling that the story is just another case of, umm, I'm not sure if there's a proper term for this, "introduced correlation", i.e. they were looking for this kinda of story and just twisted facts to support one. They do it all the time to try to connect violence and video games.
Really, look at what happened. A guy, likely with preexisting health conditions went to a movie, saw it, and got strobe'd to death. I'm sure it happens all the time with other movies as well, but Avatar just so happens to loom so large in the public consciousness at the moment.
Remember, media, any media, including news, will never let something so troublesome as reality get in the way of hooking in an audience.
