Maybe I'm just old and jaded.

Spoiler:
I guess I had hoped for some more insight into the prawns' biology, culture, etc. The things had been living on earth for twenty years, but it seems that the scientists didn't really know that much about them.

Also, 99.9% of humanity hated them? (Yes, I know it's an allegory-- emphasis on GORY--and a heavy handed one at that.) There didn't seem to be many "Prawns' Rights" groups.

Hey, why do even the scientists call them "prawns" when that is a derogatory slang term?

Plus, I was kind of annoyed by the Star Wars approach to language. I guess that the humans and prawns probably don't have compatible vocal organs and all, but it was unclear to what extent they knew each other's languages. Half the time it was like when Stewie talks on Family Guy. That is, the interlocutors basically appeared to be having separate conversations.

It was cool to see a gravity gun.

Bloo, why don't you respect the robot when the robot states, "no." Does it mean nothing to you that "no means no" if the being stating tsuch things... is a robot?

Saw it. Liked it. Not one of my favorite movies ever but definitely high on the list.

Only peeve is that the aliens seemed waaay too human. Right down to expressions. Greater exploration into their biology and culture would have been great.

Spoiler:
Also, it's not really that 99.9% of humanity hates them (notice the alien-rights activists at the beginning?). I think it's more that the South Africans hate them because they were pests. There were comments that they engaged in acts of property destruction for recreation, they eat tires and rummage through garbage, and notice that overall the prawns were very confrontational. Imagine giant cockroaches, swarming and multiplying in your town, stealing and eating your stuff, and generally being dicks about it. Also they wielded weapons that could make its targets go splat.

Even in the ship itself, they were overpopulated, malnourished, and basically lived in a giant tin can slum. On a spaceship. They couldn't subdue their instincts to breed and consume in an environment where such restraint is absolutely imperative for the well being of the ship. They were an over sized, sentient pest species.

And they weren't willing/capable of sharing their knowledge and technology with us.

You'd hate them too.

Doesn't justify the humans being complete dicks with them though.

Also, the prawns are not named after the aquatic kind.

Hmm... I had always assumed it was the aquatic kind...

Saw this today. I was totally underwhelmed! I mean it was well made and all, but woefully underwritten.

What was so smart about it? What was the message? Humans are prejudiced against the aliens, they treat 'em badly. So?

And then nothing really happened!
Spoiler:
Wikus gets exposed, starts turning into an alien, escapes the lab, then he just runs for the rest of the movie. He doesn't really learn any lessons (he's driven solely by his own personal plight), we don't explore any interesting attitudes towards him or the aliens, and we don't know or care what happens when the guy makes it to the mothership and it leaves.

I didn't hate the movie, but I was just disappointed relative to the universal love for it.

Good point, Bernie.
Spoiler:
Wikus was so ridiculously egocentric throughout the entire movie (and he's supposed to be the advocate for the prawns?), and I just figured that they were setting him up for some horribly hackneyed character developed. But that doesn't even happen. I don't know how I should feel. On the one hand, they avoided a cliché, on the other, the protagonist was totally one-dimensional.

Spoiler:
I was under the impression that there wasn't supposed to be a point. Just a tale of one asshole getting totally fucked up, and the events that unfolded from that. I saw it as a subversion of traditional hackneyed 'character development' arcs. Either that or the film was grounded more on thrills and spectacle rather than substance.

I don't see that as a bad thing.

went to see it today. i have some reservations, mostly concerning how they needlessly went from that amazing reality TV feel to a Peter Jacksonian epic.
Spoiler:
i think they needn't have gone all shootey-explodey in the second half. and they really went over the top with the mech.

but i am perfectly willing to put all these aside, because it delivered much more often than disappointed.
i hear the general consensus is that it's the freshest and most innovative work in the SF area since the original Matrix. i absolutely agree with this standpoint.

and i hope to God they refrain from making a sequel.
of course, they probably won't.

Saw the movie friday evening, and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised.

The whole story and all the small details felt really good.

I also love the fact that for once, this Sci Fi movie with aliens did not take the USA as country where the events happen.

It would have never worked if they did that Smile
