I figured, since we didn't have a topic about the last movie you watched (and I think "What are you watching at the moment" is something different) I'd start one.
And also, the last movie I watched is Crank 2: High Voltage. And it's awesome. _________________

The last movie I watched was Transformers 2. It's both awesome and appalling, depending on which moment you're talking about.
I'm hoping to cleanse my palette with a A$1.95 cheap Tuesday rental from across the road today. _________________

2001: A Space Odyssey...
Proof that just because a movie is a "classic" doesn't mean it can't be boring as all fucking hell. _________________ You forget one thing: rock crushes scissors. But paper covers rock... and

THANK YOU!!! If it werent' for the long run-time for such little story, it wouldn't be so bad. I fell asleep twice during my first viewing. _________________ Only the strongest will survive.

You know, I hate classic extremists. It's like... everything that isn't the original automatically isn't as good as the original. Aliens was better. The new Ninja Gaiden was better. Super Mario 64 was better than Mario Bros.
It wasn't a movie, but I just watched a (new I think) episode of Spectacular Spider-Man. I hope they put Carnage in there.
Last movie I watched was the opening to that one game that horny adolescent boys jack off to. Uh... that Dead or Alive sports game.
What the hell were they thinking? That isn't a video game. That's watered-down lesbian porno in the making. |

Luckily for Alien and Aliens, they're both classics.
Oh yeah, and I watched Doomsday last night before going to sleep. _________________

Terminator: Salvation Definitely not a classic. Enjoyable enough though, in its own way... _________________ Da Fro-mastah of da aLp Forums!

I just thought we should throw the word 'classic' again.

This is completely off the subject, but...
Is it just me or did you find Starship Troopers cgi work WAY ahead of it's time? _________________ You forget one thing: rock crushes scissors. But paper covers rock... and

A little dated now, but yeah I agree. Though Jurassic Park was much more of a milestone. _________________ Only the strongest will survive.

Still makes you wonder, if movies like Jurassic Park and Starship Troopers can do the CGI so good, why are there movies were it plainly sucks. Like for instance, the Matrix Reloaded. _________________

Because they used tricks in the former to hide its primitive nature. Notice for instance the T-Rex scenes in Jurassic Park, which were always shrouded in rain/darkness, or just fundamentally so simple as to allow easy digital painting. Contrast this to say, the raptors in the kitchen, which do look absolutely fake.
Still, those effects do still hold reasonably well compared to many modern films. The thing is that back in the day, digital special effects where just that, special. They were high-cost, high-effort tools with the reward of more fantastic, detailed, and manageable effects. They were so expensive in the first place, it just didn't make sense not to pull out as much as one could from the tech.
Nowadays, digital effects are so ubiquitous and widespread that anything special about them has long since drained out. Routine sandwalls, (not)space-marines, rampant destruction of public property, etc. are now almost always handled digitally, since it's just easier and cheaper that way. The Star Wars prequels definitely suffered because of this.
So far the only truly good applications of CG I can remember are when such tech is pushed to the edge. Lord of the Rings, for example, had fucking massive set pieces that could only be handled digitally, and worked great because they were essentially had to push the tech forward. Iron Man had some decent CG because there was so much focus on the suits, and would have failed if they didn't use CG adequately, though even then one could see that the use of CG was minimal.
In fact, the best use of digital effects are when they're minimal. See Jurassic Park, the destruction of the White House in Independence Day, the first Matrix, etc. Again, those were examples when digital effects were special effects.
This is one reason I like Farscape so much. They manage to pull off a variety of weird, alien creatures that were puppets. That worked. Beautifully. This is the same reason why so many of the old horror flicks (Blob, Aliens, The Thing, etc.) still look so great. Real models/muppets/creatures (I'm looking at you Jones 4), will always be surperior to CG. Its really a shame that the industry adopted CG so thoroughly, leaving old arts like animatronics and such in the dust. _________________

The alien queen in Aliens has got to be the most impressive movie monster I've ever seen. No CGI whatsoever, and yet it is one of the most believable monsters in any movie, in my opinion.
And at what Simon said, thankfully they haven't really gotten rid of all the animatronics, suits and puppetry. Even movies like the the AvP's that have tons of CGI, still found plenty of opportunities for non digital stuff. _________________ You forget one thing: rock crushes scissors.
