Over the holiday weekend I ate turkey, lots of turkey, more turkey, hella turkey, and the One Turkey Soup to Rule Them All. Good times were had. Then on Sunday, since I was in the neighborhood I went to a place called Fire + Ice in Providence, RI, which is one of those deals where you throw a whole bunch of raw food in a bowl and they grill it up for you. And you can go up as many times as you want. Pure bliss, made even better by the fact that the whole meal was on Ernie (thanks again!).

It got me to wondering where all the good a.y.c.e.’s are here in NY. I’m not talkin ’bout shrimp at Sizzler… I’m talkin quality a.y.c.e. Like unlimited sushi at Kinoko on W. 72nd and Okura on 17th and 3rd, non-stop Brazilian bbq at Churrascaria Plataforma, and endless Korean bbq at Yakiniku Juju on E. 28th. Where’s your favorite a.y.c.e.?

Yeah, they have Fire & Ice in Boston. Very nice. Actually, the thing I enjoyed most was dessert. But the cooking part was fun too.

What, I can’t talk about today’s strip, I gotta talk about all you can eat? Why isn’t there an episode comment thread? Screw that.

The your mother joke has, of course, graduated from a casual insult to an art form, kind of like a sonnet or a sonata. And needless to say, it’s been hugely played out. It ain’t easy to actually make somebody laugh with one. So I am happy to report a hearty chuckle. Phrasing in the third panel is perfect, but it also didn’t hurt that it’s an ALIEN talking. Suppose the novelty of that will wear off eventually….

I know a couple of Indian buffets…. one is Madras Mahal, on Lex at around 27th St, and the other’s name I don’t remember, but it’s on Columbus and at around 74th. Thanks for the sushi tips….

OK Dean, for the zillionth time, Osaka is a city in Japan, Okura is an AYCE place.

Couple of other AYCE places, courtesy of Zagat’s (2004 version):

Ambassador Grill (1 UN Plaza), but have no idea what the AYCE is (probably a buffet)
Charles’ Southern-Style Kitchen (2839 Eighth Avenue, at 151st Street): AYCE buffet
Charlotte (145 W. 44th Street): again, no idea what it is, but probably buffet
La Tour (1319 Third Avenue, 75th and 76th Streets): AYCE mussels and fries
Minado (6 East 32nd Street): AYCE, serve yourself sushi, salads and hot dishes
Sapphire Indian (1845 Broadway, between 60th and 61st): AYCE lunch buffet
Tennessee Mountain (143 Spring Street): AYCE BBQ on Monday and Tuesday
Vatan (409 Third Avenue at 29th Street): AYCE vegetarian, with Indian “village” setting
Yuka (1557 Second Avenue, at 80th and 81st Street): AYCE sushi
Becco (355 West 46th Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues): AYCE pasta (and Bern, since we took you there for your XXth birthday, you should have remembered).

I’m up for ayce. I figure this is my best opportunity to publicize my theories on ayce in general. Of course it’s about gluttony. I have always been fascinated with the economics behind it. The restaurant is gambling that you’ll actually consume less than usual or at least little enough for them to make a profit, or that other high margin items like drinks will make the prospect worth it. From the consumer’s perspective it’s simpler. There are three levels: 1. You lose money because you pay more than you would have for entrees; 2. You make out by eating more than you would have been able to paying per item; and 3. You WIN because you actually make the restaurant LOSE MONEY. This is always my goal when going for ayce. It’s a matter of pride.

Oh my god, I would totally be up for an NYC AYCE crawl. I love food more than anything on God’s green earth.

All I want is to try to make restaurants go bankrupt. :twisted:

Oh, and –this might be the wrong side of the Hudson, but few of my fave AYCE’s are Seabras Armory in Perth Amboy, NJ (Tons of great Portuguese food–the rodizio is the best) and the Round Grill in New Brunswick, NJ (Mongolian barbecue–the bowls are bigger than my head )

Stu, I definitely agree about the soup/salad. Also, pacing is very important. If that first order is too big, you will be in trouble.

OK, so a bunch of us went to Minado Saturday night to celebrate a friend’s birthday. After seeing their menu, we decided to try it out.

Wow. They had a lot of stuff. Actually, that’s an understatement: the buffet for the dishes stretched nearly a full city block.

And it was really, really good. I had two really stuffed plates and was full beyond belief. And their spicy sushi was the spiciest I have ever had (probably use the real hot stuff like on Iron Chef); for me, that say a lot. Bernie loved the crab legs, and everyone seemed real impressed with the place.

Two very enthusiastic thumbs up, and one rather upset stomach the next morning, from me.

I disagree, I like ayce because I can try many different dishes. This too is somethig that is usually much more expensive with individual orders.

If many dishes are good and I want to ‘try them again’ I usually eat till it hurts, so I guess the result is the same as with trying to ruin the retaurant.

i know its not in nyc or even america! but it is the ultimate chinese all u can eat buffet in the world!!! and its rite here in england! in yateley tis called peter’s palace, i know it doesnt sound very chinesey but the owner, peter, is the most chinese lookin guy on the planet and every1 that works there is chinese or japanese. its like £5 for an a.y.c.e (thats like $10) wow i cant believe how much i ate at dat place!

so if u ever come to england, which btw is a gd idea, go to yateley, avoid all da guys wiv da knives and go to peter’s palace

i shud get payed for dat im like advertisin or sumthing! :)

Mmmm… America seems full of delicious food! Malaysia has its fair share, though. We have chillied prawn paste (sambal belacan), fish fritters (keropok lekor), kacang pool (beef stewed with peanuts), murtabak (Asian meatloaf 2ft long), Assam laksa (spicy-sour noodles), Char Kuey Teow (fried flat noodles with meat, vege, etc.), Ham Choi Tong (Salted Vegetable Broth), and the list goes on! Stop by Malaysia one day! The foods worth it!

Another trick is to go with a LOT of friends. Go with a large enough party and keep ordering ancillary things like drinks and most restaurants won’t throw you out or rush you. And, the longer you sit and chat with friends while you eat, the more you can usually eat if you pace it right. It’s the way I can get around 3 hours of churrascaria in me and still have room for dessert and still not feel full. Not bad for a skinny bastard! :D

I also heard good things about drinking hot tea in order to increase the amount of food you can ingest, although you would want to do so at least a few hours before eating as well to really prep yourself.

It’s all about getting more bang for your buck!
