Heheheh, nice one.
Yeah, I’d like to see Heidi Klum too ;)
But one thing that bothers me…The Amsterdam = Drugs joke.
It’s true you can buy and use drugs in Amsterdam, but the major part of the Dutch don’t use any form of drugs.
*few that’s off my chest*
Great Comic anyway :D

I wonder if they’re going to make that movie, since it was hinted at the end of the original movie.

Lol.
But indeed, this way it looks like all we do over here in Holland is use drugs…

Cool. Reminds me of an FHM stunt in 1999, projecting a naked Gail Porter on to the UK Houses of Parliament. Classy eh (and where is she now, or who was she to begin with if you’re not from the UK)?

They airbrushed her nipples out! Gah! I’m sure that reduced the number of fatal car accidents on Westminster bridge, although thankfully St. Thomas’ Hospital sits at the other end.

Heh heh… I’m sorry to say that when I visited The Netherlands, I did those lame touristy things.

I went to The Bulldog because Van Halen went there in their “Amsterdam” video clip in 1996. I even took a photo of a photo of them there!
One of my mates bought a pipe and stuff to smoke and wanted to bring it back to Australia with him then thought better of it because it was used. Instead, he hid it in some bushes with the rest of his grass… not that far from a school.

I still have a pair of clogs I bought in The Netherlands!

Man, i feel you on that
My hood is FLOODED with ads.
The worst and most offending, several years ago, there WAS a beautiful building that overlooked the intersection of W. Broadway and Broome.

they were selling the building and next thing you know, there was HUMONGOUS light board just tacked over 2-3 floors of the prime windows that overlook the intersection.

I tell you, there is SUPPOSED to be a law to stop it, but as long as ad revenues flow, the city (I’M TALKIN TO U MAYOR MIKE) is turning its back.

Thanks for highlighting a growing problem

oh yeah, keep up the good work

Now I have a question, being that I reside in a sprawling wasteland of cookie cutter homes, Don’t the residents of these buildings get PISSED when they put these things up? Doesn’t it ruin their view or something? And a note about Amsterdamn: I feel your pain but its a necessary evil. I live in Orlando FL, all I hear is “Oh, you must love Disney” In actuality nearly all the Orlando natives that I know cant stand the place and avoid it like the plague, but thats all we hear and thats all we get recognition for, but the fact is it brings in the money so we can’t complain to much. I’m sure the same is true of Amsterdamn. Blame the politicians for not doing something about it.

I don’t really think people in Amsterdam care that they’re often being associated with drugs… they’re probably too stoned to care :P
I come from the eastern part of Holland… and I don’t really care…

The H&M ad is just temporary and covering scaffolds while the building is under construction. It still looks crappy, but it’ll be gone once they finish the work. It’s not like you could take a picture of it with the construction anyways- though it might be a great time for someone to go down there and sell their pictures of Flatiron.

Heh, H&M is a swedish brand that is considered to be really… tame in sweden.

Hi, I’m new here… love the comic, gently pissed myself reading the archives.

As for the Amsterdam thing, loads of people from here in the UK go specifically for the smoke and red light district. I’m sure not all Dutch people, or even Amsterdam residents, are drug users, but it’s what the tourists go for.

Having said that, I live in a city that’s known as the gay capital of the Uk… and not everyone here bats for the other side. We do all take drugs though. It’s in the town charter.

Probably.

Is it just me, or is everyone from Amsterdam who is posting here missing the freaking point!?!? This comic was intented to show how commercialism and superceded good taste in the industrialized world. The choice of that particular movie was made because it juxtaposes an especially tasteless (though possibly hilarious) movie with a very famous landmark. This comic was not intended to make some statement about drug use in Amsterdam, so all you people pull the sticks out of your asses and get a clue already!

tenchi89
April 4, 2005 at 4:30 pm

Hmm, last time I checked the stick had been removed a couple weeks ago. And I payed a pretty penny for that as well. I think everyone gets the point of the comic, this is what we call a “side note” See, its like when you look at something, lets say an ice cream cone, and instead of thinking of the obvious thing, how yummy ice cream is, you think of all the Malaysian workers that have been exploited to create those damn delectable delicious diabetic coma inducing sprinkles on top. As a side note to this side note, I want some ice cream now.

Dammit! I hate getting drawn into pointless arguments, but I feel compelled to defend my point nevertheless.
What we have here is a case of “fixating on the irrelevant.” The whole Amsterdam/drug use issue was presented in an accusatory (albeit calm) manner, as if Bernie were guilty of perpetuating a negative stereotype for the sake of a joke. Instead, he was merely using a known entity (i. e., the proposed Harold and Kumar sequel) within the context of another joke. Any number of tasteless movies would have served in that capacity with equal efficacy. This is why I took exception to the reply.

And yes, some ice cream would be good right about now.

Thanks for the geography lesson. My rant was mainly aimed at those from Amsterdam who seem to take offense here, but I invite all Hollanders who miss the point and feel the need to defend their brothers to remove the sticks from their repective asses as well.

First of all, I don’t mind that it was put in the comic. I come from the eastern part of Holland. It’s really different then the western part. Amsterdam is in the west. In Amsterdam it’s all offices and shit, over here it’s cows… in the west it’s drugs, over here it’s beer. Actually I have totally no clue what I’m going on about. But to continue, I just noticed it, it wasn’t ment as negative criticism. Or something… you get my point right?

Now if you don’t mind, there’s a blunt lying on the desk with my name on it, so I’ll be back in an hour or so…

I live in Jacksonville FL, and I’ve never set foot in Disney World. Does make us tourist bucks though. You know, as people stop by for gas or something and I follow them around in a canoe with a banjo. (hope everybody got the Deliverance reference)

I agree 100% with “guest” that the Dutch are missing the point. It’s not that Amsterdam is being unfairly depicted in the comic strip. The point (I’m amazed I need to make it, as it is so damn obvious) is that pot is far more expensive in Amsterdam than in Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver, and the quality is better here too.

While everyone’s taking their hard-earned cash to the admittedly beautiful Amsterdam (when bodies aren’t being fished out of the canals, that is), and handing over a good chunk of funds to all sorts of worthy causes (ie, coffee shops) before they even buy the overpriced, under-powered, tobacco-heavy joints, those who like value should just head to Canada and get nicely fucked up for less than the price of a cup of coffee.

So now does everyone get the point of comic #95? And what was someone saying about the commodification of public space? Were we all reading the same comic?
