That’s a pretty interesting observation… I agree. And yeah I guess Brazilians are a bit tricky to classify, considering all the mixture in our blood/heritage. We come in all colors and flavours: from milky white to dark chocolate!

@H: thank you for your thoughtful post. However, I think there is another element there as well: the wish people have to decide themselves what they should be called, instead of others deciding. At least, that’s why some terms in the Netherlands have changed (‘foreigner’ becoming ‘New Dutch’). Some others have changed because of the uneasiness felt by the dominant group (people seem to prefer to call Jews and – to a lesser degree – Turks ‘Jewish people’ and ‘Turkish people’ – a stupid thing, because it almost sounds like one might expect Jews and Turks to be less then people).

Brazilians are stereotypically portrayed as tan and therefore the race/ethnicity is considered to be one of “brown/golden” people. It’s apparently because of all the intermarriage of Europeans, natives, and Africans who were brought over as slaves. I, however, happen to be so white that I’ve never even had to worry about such a thing as “blending in” sunscreen. I’m just that pale.

Have you ever noticed, by the way, that Brazilians have to refer to themselves as Latinos because we can’t be considered Hispanics (being that we don’t speak Spanish and all) but never have Italians or the French been known to do likewise? They always just default back to “European”, or at least, they have in my general experience. Just… you know… an observation.

Instead, I think we should adopt the Crayola standard: “A marigold woman married a cornflower man, and they’re expecting an electric lime baby in May.”
