hey, i’m well late to this party but couldn’t help but chip in with my 2 cents if anyone is still gonna read posts on comics this far back. we never used to play the free parking jackpot rule when i was a kid until we played with my auntie and uncle and they taught us. my family doesn’t usually play it (but they do play a rule where you have to go once round the board before you can buy any properties. also my brother cheats. 2 reasons why i never play with my family any more.), but i do when i play it with friends. obviously the people at parker bros. are aware of the free parking rule cos on the playstation monopoly game you can play it, and not only that but you can choose to have a minimum amount that the chance/community chest/tax money builds on top of (you don’t need to worry about running out of money on the ps!). me and my mates always set it to £750 (cos we’re british, guvnor), and by the end of our 5 hour long drunken game we all have about £10 000 and give up.

and i know anyone who hasn’t played it is probably sceptical (i was too a few years back) but actually monopoly on the playstation is the cat’s pyjamas. no setting up, no keeping an eye on little bro to make sure he isn’t pinching money from the bank, no running out of houses or notes, no mistakes, and best of all no bartering. if you don’t have enough money you can’t owe your mum a few quid. you’re dead mate. pure militance.
oh, plus you can play with dinosaurs and space ships if you get bored of the classic pieces.

I am almost certain there are versions of the game that mention the free parking jackpot as an "optional rule".

I remember playing both ways as a kid. And that awful restriction on trading before all properties are sold. Bleh.

The most fun is playing "anything goes". Any kind of bargaining tools could be used, including limited immunities from paying rent, that sort of thing.

BTW, could you give us a brush up on "your" and "you’re"?

ya know, not only do i play with the "free parking = huge gobs of money" rule (my older sister introduced me), but i’m 99% sure it’s in a Windows version of the game, too. i swear it was one of the options, along with the "no trading until all properties are owned" rule. i used to play it all the time, and i remember the wonderful .wav of nickels and dimes when i hit the spot.

i can’t play it anymore though; game’s too old and won’t work on any of my machines. you’re right, progress sucks.

Here in Italy, no one I have so far asked has ever heard of the Free Parking Jackpot Rule…
… weird how, after wanting to post on so many occasions, but being too lazy to register, it’s Monopoly that forces me to get off my virtual ass…
