Hey, I'd thought I'd chime in on this topic since I am an employee at the Virgin Megastore in Orange, CA. As of right now, we're actually doing fairly well, especially since Tower closed and we inherited their Star Lounge CD promotion. If you just check in frequently you're likely to walk into one of our random sales where you actually get great CDs for less than $10, and so far nearly every night of this year we've been beating plan ("Plan" is the amount of money we made on that day the year before, and thus our goal for that day). Given, this is just the store I work at, which is the most prosperous in California, and our store in Boston just closed down, too.

But hey! Employee discounts on CDs, DVDs, and clothing is about 40%, so it's an especially awesome place if you work there.

I love CD's. I have a collection that woudl take up a whole bookcase (well, a small one anyway). I burn my own as well.

I do not love the prices. Which is why in college I tended to check the small store in the shopping strip near campus before going up to Providence Place to buy a CD. Or I ordered them online, where I could have my pick from teh new and used.

If I want a CD, I can now take the bus downtown to Cutler's and see if they have it. Their prices tend to actually be lower than chain stores, though not always by much. Failing that, I check out Amazon for song samples and then try to find tracks on eMule. Can't always find the whole album though, so I end up searching track by track, but it beats forking over 20 bucks for one disc.

What's great about this strip is that the Virgin megastores are so big that I wouldn't be surprised if they actually had an aisle for virgins...

... I couldn't imagine how that would sell, but still.

Hell yeah for King's X!

I saw them down in Phoenix with Chris Poland's OHM. It was just a small club show, but it was one of the best I've ever seen.

I get most of my media from boot sales. Never pay more than £2 for an album and £5 for a DVD, that's my motto; if the seller won't go that cheap there's someone else who will. (Always check for scratches first, though.)

last cd i bought was last week and it was Peeping Tom's (=Mike Patton's) Peeping Tom.

when it comes to buying music, i'm a compulsive.
i love buying cd's.
i hate them for being so expensive.
and i continue to love them tragically.

although i must admit my buying rate dropped considerably this year.

the Virgin Megastore in London's Picadilly Circus was like a spiritual experience to me. all this music. by all those artists i dig. in one place. and some of them are even buyable (5£ on sale is not bad).

record stores back here in Poland suck so bad it almost makes me weep.

Exactly. There still could theoretically be a market for CDs, because there's at least a little something nice about buying a new CD and popping it into your stereo, and having the cover art and booklet and everything... but not at those prices.

Also, I love how Abe and Preston's closet has all those t-shirts and clothes, when neither of them ever wear anything.

As a former manager of a Musicland, Sam Goody and Recordtown for the better part of five years, I have to weigh in on this.
I could never understand how chain stores EVER stayed in business. Maybe it was just that there was no alternative. Did you know it only cost $1 more to create a CD than it did a cassette? We were promised that CD's would drop in price after the initial release, and they didn't. I watched as a brand new cd from the latest and most popular boy bands would sell BRAND NEW for $21.99. It would be ON SALE for $20.99. Dead f'in serious.
I would see military guys fresh off the base drop $100 for just four CD's without blinking, knowing that about 20 minutes away they could go to a local chain called Manifest and get brand new CD's for $13.99.
Then Best Buy came into the picture. Every store was shaking in their boots The Musicland Group filed for Chapter 11 almost immediately. You could go to BB and get CD's for $5 to $8 cheaper than the mall stores, and they were right across the street! Plus the staff wouldn't bug you.
What always got me was Musicland's crappy "Replay" music club. You wouldn't get a discount, instead you had to buy $100 worth of CD's to get a coupon mailed to yoru house for one free CD. They would force us to sell at least 4 of these a week or you'd get fired.
Napster didn't kill the music industry. Paying $18.99 for one halfway decent song on a crappy CD did. Napster just leveled the playing field.
*Whew*
In other news, an excellent comic as always. Your skill continues to amaze me.
