An interesting fact about the Statutory Rape laws in the state of New Hampshire: Anyone under the age of 16 cannot legally engage in any sexual activity. A former judge turned teen advocate cited an example where a friend of his had a 16 year-old boy who had sex with his 15 year-old girlfriend of 2 years. The father of the girl pressed charges and the boy had to register as a sex offender, spend a short time in jail (a week, I believe, which is long as hell when you’re the one who’s been locked up, but…), and go to classes to help him "rehabilitate."

So for any young men out there, make sure you read the laws carefully and, if you are going to break them, the only place that is safe is the comfort of one’s home. Be careful out there.

The rest of this post isn’t very funny and for that I apologize and blame too much caffeine and not enough actual sleep.

That said, Dateline — as mentioned in the previous AlP — goes on for 5 pages of crowing about how they lured perverts in, promsing them sex with minors before getting to — under the fold (old newspaper term), mind you — the actual mitigation factor to this "epidemic" which is "Teens need to know that more than just their friends are reading what they post." (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12960173/page/6/) Oh, and, you know, maybe refrain from handing out your phone number and physical address to every kook and pervert that hits you up in a chat room.

Really, back before we had this new-fangled "Interweb" thing, all kids had to be worried about were strangers with candy. Oh, and family members and "friends" of the family that accounted for some 80%+ of all reported sexual assaults on children. I suppose from this point of view, we should be thankful for trolling perverts — statistically and completely sarcastically speaking, they make our friends and family "relatively" safer.

Don’t misconstrue this as some kind of "perverts are good and normal" post. The point of this post is that we need to teach kids how to actively defend themselves from freaks and perverts, and not just fearfully simper or try to coyly talk it away. They are prey because they don’t fight back against the will of the predator — and that’s why the situation continues to exist.
