A&P don’t seem to be quite shure about the origin of Santa Claus. Anyone knows “Snotties Grale”* by Tom Holt? He tells the truth:
Claus was originally the forth wise man. He forgot to bring a present and so he just took his spare socks to give them to the newborn Christ. For this fauxpas Mary put a curse on him to eternally walk the earth and distribute unwanted presents in socks all over the world on Dec. 24.

*Sorry, don’t know if this is actually the original english title. I only have the german translation.
