I never said the gates didn't do anything (I'm aware someone else did) All I did was comment that the banners should have been different. Like actually have people put their hearts into it. It would have still made a design from space, as you say, and it would have been a lot better. You want art? Go to deviantart.com, or elfwood.com. Or even go to fetalposition.net. If the gates do nothing, why was the park completely full of people to the point of it being difficult to walk on the paths on Saturday, even though it was cold, snowing and not sunny? Filling the park with people is itself very much something that the Gates DID do. And as to saying "How are the banners art?" well you don't even have to go see them to figure that out. Look at the coverage on the NYTimes website that is linked. There are photos of the park from space and together they all create an intricate pattern, and that is at the most removed level. When you experience them they are fabulous, they are material manifestations of the movements of the wind, they create beautiful golden light even when the sky is grey, and the scale behind the whole idea is in itself art. Art is not a singularly defined category, that is why Duchamp could make a urinal on its back one of the most important works of the 20th century. The Gates aren't there to tell you anything; art doesn't answer, art asks.
