Actually, Dan O’Bannon’s story didn’t specify which roles were male or female. They were decided after the names were changed (by others) from the ones O’Bannon created E.g. "Ripley" was originally "Standard" and could have been a man or a woman.

The overt sexual imagery in Alien is all Giger’s doing. Other concept artists kept making up completely unscary Lost-in-Space-esque monsters, and one concept for the face-hugger was a starfish-like creature.

The only creature Giger didn’t design was the chestburster. He envisioned a chicken-like creature that looked terrible. So other designers just made a smaller version of the adult alien with no arms or legs.

You can draw all sorts of conclusions from the imagery used in Alien, and insert any meanings you think are there, but it wasn’t intended by the writers.

Who knows what Giger was thinking? Who WANTS to know what Giger is thinking? And I mean ever. He is a strange, strange man.

Well, you can try and argue that Alien wasn’t meant to stand for a metaphor of rape, forced sex, male domination…
But who is fighting the damn things through ALL the movies.

Actually, Giger himself wrote that the concept of the face huggers was that of an “ambulatory penis”. The eggs openings, on their top, were initially designed after vaginas. As it was too obvious, he made them cross-shaped.

It wasn’t all about sex – only the designs were.

Dan O’Bannon, when writing it, didn’t put in anything he thought carried sexual inuendo, but because of Giger’s designs, people immediately thought he did.

He wanted something scary, not some walking metaphore for genitalia.

And did you guys know the reason for the four-flapped eggs was because Giger’s original design looked like a vagina?
